This Isn't Wonderland
It seems there is utter Alice in Wonderland fever because of Tim Burton. We are getting little snippets here, there and everywhere now.
I came across the work of photographer Marc Da Cunha Lopes, who is a talented commercial photographer, but he creates some truly terrifying images, even for me!
I was a bit disturbed by these for some reason. They are evocative of Alice in Wonderland, although I don't think the reference is a literal one, and I find them a little bit creepy. Is that a good thing? To get a response even it's one of slight unease? I suspect that was his intention if some of his other work is anything to go by.

These are great photographs. I love the one with the girl reading on the bed, it looks so odd.

The raspberry one is cute, just like in the opening scenes of Amelie. The first one.... weirds me out bigtime.

Love them! But then I kinda like slightly creepy art!

Weird...they don't seem creepy to me! I think they're whimsical without being aggressively cutesy. And the white rat is quite charming!

They are wonderfully whimsical and I should find them creepy but don't. I think it is because the images aren't fetishised in any way. There is no focus on the girl per se, it is all part of the mise-en-scene. Gosh big words for me today but these are fab to see!

These are great! I like that the the creepiness is achieved through unusual size relations than clichéd means (like blood and gore). Also little girl looking totally comfortable in this surrounding makes her look strong and kinda cool.

I kind of think these are absolutely adorable! Is that a bad thing? :D

Anything with rats or mice freaks me out. I can cuddle spiders, kill cockroaches with my bare hands, and all manner of things other people find terrifying. But those tiny critters flip me out! Aside from that, I do like the composition and the play with proportions. I just wish it were a bat or a snake, anything but that creepy little vermin!

I love these! Not creepy at all, reminds me of my old pet ratty :)

I think these are really cute. They look a lot like my good and happy dreams.

Ok that is the creepiest thing I've ever seen. I have rats myself and I can guarentee they don't grow that big where I'm from!
That child is slightly weird too, reminds me of a cross between some scary old dolls I used to have and Mara Wilson in 'Mathilda'. But the overall effect is kind of intriguing.Posted by: RedHeadFashionista | Wednesday, 03 March 2010 at 15:11
I don;t know who the child is but she looks so young and yet her expressions and poses are very mature and quite spot on. What fantastic work.

i like it. even though i'm getting a little tired of alice by now. these are creeeeeepy. in a good way, i think.

creepy yes, I think its something to do with the girl's face, it looks really young and oddly mature at the same time

it's weird, I don't find these creepy atall! I agree with the earlier comment that the girl looks quite strong. She sort of looks like she is the princess of her own little world, and completley comfortable with the giant rats that live there! definatley in power of them!
it's so interesting how different people read different things into the same image

I actually know a 4 year old who looks just like this! She has a more grown-up coiffed hair-do that I. Kids these days... this is super cool.
